True story, the second most read page on a website is your bio. This is where prospective clients and other professionals turn to learn about you and what you do. They want to know something about you and the story behind your business or profession. But also, they seek to find a personal connection, something that resonates with them.
And let’s face it, it is not always easy to write about yourself. You don’t want to come across as self-centered, but you don’t want to sell yourself short either. Here are three tips to build an eye-catching bio:
Share your backstory
The best bio writers are not afraid to show a little bit of who they are. Clients want to hear your story and know your purpose and why they should choose you. Whether you sell products or services, statistics show that people have a natural curiosity about your background and what led you to where you are today. When you write your bio, ask yourself:
- Why did you get into this field? Was there a person or event that inspired you?
- How or why did you choose your career path?
- What makes you stand out in a specific industry and what differentiates you?
- Share what you love most about your work.
- Think of someone asking you, “what do you like to do” and how you would respond.
- If you had 30 seconds to tell someone who you are, what would you say?
Be Authentic
It’s okay to be vulnerable. In fact most successful professionals share personal stories on their websites and blogs, inviting visitors to get to know them better. If your readers can find a human connection to you, it makes a tremendous difference. Why? Because it’s all about relationships. For instance, if you have had more than one career, tell your audience about that. The most successful people have, more often than not, tried several different career paths and that experience brings a wealth of knowledge.
Build Trust
Trust and value (in this order) are two very important things. Think about long-standing clients and why they keep coming back to you. Write about these things and you’ll soon find a larger base of regular clients. Don’t be afraid to point to a successful track record if that speaks to the value you can offer a new client. Be transparent and engage with your customers by being responsive and starting conversations. This takes work and planning but it will help you cultivate a lasting trust that will build brand loyalty and benefit your business.
